2009 WSOP Event #27 had a star studded final table with Roland de Wolfe, Andy Black, Scott Clements, Antony Lellouche, and Alex Kravchenko all competing for a coveted WSOP bracelet. In the end it was Roland de Wolfe, who coming into this event many considered the best to have never won a bracelet, who took it down by defeating 2009 PokerStars SCOOP Champion Brett Richey in the final.
Roland de Wolfe now joins Gavin Griffin as the only Triple Crown of Poker winners, meaning they’ve won at least one WSOP Bracelet, EPT Championship and WPT trophy. In his post match interview de Wolfe commented “Ever since I won the event in Dublin at the EPT, I have been wanting the bracelet, which is the missing link. Three years I have been here at the finals, and today I finally got a few breaks. I am very much aware of the history behind this, and the best thing of all is to win all three (major poker titles).”
Here’s how the final table played out:
2009 WSOP Event 27 ($5,000 Pot-Limit Omaha Hi/Lo) Final Table Report
Eight of the tournaments original 198 players returned today to battle it out for the Event #27, $5,000 Pot-Limit Omaha Hi/Lo bracelet. Scott Clements came into the final table with the chip lead and continued to build on that as he quickly sent Antony Lellouche to the rail in ninth to collect $26,965. On this hand Clements raised preflop, Lellouche called and the flop came Tc, 8d 6c. Lellouche led out holding Ac Qs Ts 3d for a nut low draw. Clements raised him, each player got their chips in the middle and Clements showed Ad 9d 7d 2h for a flopped nut straight with a nut low draw. The turn and river came Td Jh meaning there was no low as Clements scooped the pot.
It was a nice run for Armando Ruiz who coming into this event had never cashed in a major poker tournament, however this run ended in eighth place and he received $32,105 after he got his chips in preflop with Ah Qh 3h 2h and ran into Brett Richey’s AsAc9d7c. The bored paired kings and eights and when the river was a jack Ruiz was to the rail.
Next to go was John Racener after he got all in against Robert Campbell on the board of 10c4c2h9h, and showed Ac3d9s8c for second pair with the nut-flush draw in clubs and the nut-low draw. Campbell tabled Ah7h3c2s for the same low draw and the nut-flush draw in hearts. The 3h on the river locked up the high for Campbell and meant that Campbell’s A-7 played for low – just enough to beat Racener’s A-8.
In recent years, Andy Black has been in the mix often in WSOP events however when he wakes up in the morning he’ll still be WSOP braceletless. On his final hand Black raised pot preflop, and Robert Campbell reraised enough to put him all in, Black called and showed Ad Ah 4d 3h as Campbell showed As Ac 5s 4h for the other two aces and a different wheel draw. The board ran Qs Js 9d 7c 6s giving Campbell a rivered winning flush good enough to scoop the pot and send Andy Black out the rail in sixth place to collect $42,993.
Russian superstar Alex Kravchenko fell short of adding another WSOP bracelet to his resume when he got his money all in preflop with 8s7s5c4c to Clements’ As9s7h5h. Neither player made much of a hand, but Clements Ace Kicker was enough to send Kravchenko to the rail.
Robert Campbell was the shortest stack coming into the final table. He managed to hang on long enough to move up significantly in the pay-tiers eventually picking up $72,121 fourth place prize money. On his final hand Campbell bet big on a 7s5c3c flop, and de Wolfe called. Campbell moved all in on the 4h turn, and de Wolfe quickly made the call. De Wolfe showed As9d7h6s for the seven-high straight, and Campbell could only muster AdAcKs8c for the nut-flush draw and an overpair. The 8s came on the river, and Campbell’s tournament was over.
Scott Clements came into the event with the chip lead, but his second Omaha Hi/Lo final table of the 2009 WSOP ended as the last one did, him leaving with no WSOP bracelet. On his final hand Clements raised preflop, de Wolfe called and the flop came 9h 7c 2c. Clements bet pot, de Wolfe raised pot, and Clements moved all in over the top. De Wolfe showed Ac 9c 8h 3s for the nut-flush draw, nut-low draw and top pair. Clements showed Ad Ah 6d 4d for an overpair and second-nut-low draw. With a 5h on the turn de Wolfe was in a commanding position for low, and when the river came Kc he filled his flush for the scoop. Scott Clements picked up $101,063 for his third place finish.
Roland de Wolfe had a massive chip lead heading into heads-up play. It did not take him long to finish his opponent Brett Richey off. The final hand saw a flop of 10c8c4d. Richey led with a bet, De Wolfe check-raised, Richey went all in and De Wolfe called. Richey held QdJs10h9h for a wrap straight draw and top pair. The 2s on the turn was no help for Richey, and when the river brought the Ah he was left with the runner-up title and $152,618. Roland de Wolfe picked up $246,616 for first place, and more importantly, his first WSOP bracelet.
