When we left off we had just lost our 3rd player from the final nine, Montgomery had made a big statement in a big time preflop hand. As we look to the final two that will return tomorrow at 10pm Local time, it’s really up for grabs from top to bottom.
On hand #86 the Phillips & Demidov battle renews as they get involved a big hand that leaves Phillips the victor after inducing a call of 5 million chips on the river with Kings Full of Three’s. As has been the case all night his supporters have been very loud and supportive, and with a recent double up and this big pot that doesn’t look to change any time soon. Shortly after this hand we head to the Dinner Break, during which some ceremonies will take place including the announcement that All-in Energy Drink will be the official energy drink of the World Series of Poker for the next few years.
When Johnny Chan (10 time bracelet winner & owner of All-in Energy) was asked by Phil Hellmuth Jr. (11 time bracelet winner & Youngest Main Event Champ) “Who’s gonna win, Johnny?” Chan replied “I don’t care who’s going to win, I just care who’s going to drink the most All-in Energy Drink.” This drew a comment of “That was pretty shameless plug, Johnny.” from Phil Hellmuth.
Prior to the end of the Dinner Break a unexpected surprise was given to the remaining six players as the Harrah’s Staff brought out the famous silver suit cases which contain the first place prize of just over 9 Million USD. It is said by many players that just this sight while still involved in the event makes a big difference.
After quite a few hands the action appears to have slowed down a bit, one has to wonder if it has something to do with the fact the money is with in sight. However on hand #103 Phillips and Demidov get it on yet again, this time it begins with Demidov opening for 1.225 Million and being called by Phillips from the cutoff. After a flop of Ac Jh 4s both Demidov and Phillips check the action and we take a turn card, which produces the 6c and brings a bet of 1.6 Million from Demidov. Phillips takes some time to consider the situation and after some thought he makes it 4 million straight and Demidov quickly gives it up.
Just two hands later we see yet another “Degree All-in Moment” as Scott Montgomery raises to 1,500,000 from the cutoff and fellow Canadian Suharto moves it all in the middle for the fourth time worth 8.550 Million. After some deliberation and quite a dejected look he finally makes the call and as the cards are tabled we have the two lone Canadian with it all in the middle:
Montgomery: As Qd
Suharto: Ah 8c
Upon seeing the situation Montgomery must be feeling really good about the decision to call, with a flop of Ks Js 2s things just continue to get better for Montgomery who now has to avoid only the two none spade eights. When the turn falls the 4s it leaves Suharto drawing dead and we quickly see the meaningless 4c on the river. With that hand Suharto is eliminated in 6th place and takes $2,418,562 home and definitely some stories. Here are the payouts thus far on the final table, along with the chip counts of the final 5.
1st $9,152,416
2nd $5,809,595
3rd $4,517,773
4th $3,774,974
5th $3,096,768
6th $2,418,562 Darus Suharto
7th $1,772,650 David “Chino” Rheem
8th $1,288,217 Kelly Kim
9th $900,670 Craig Marquis
Dennis Phillips: 20,275,000
Ylon Schwartz: 19,375,000
Scott Montgomery: 32,700,000
Ivan Demidov: 26,350,000
Peter Eastgate: 37,525,000
On hand #114 we see a monster played out! It begins with Montgomery making it 1.5 million from the SB, which is quickly re-raised to 4.025 million from Demidov. Upon which Montgomery asks Demidov “How much you have behind?” which is approximately 20 million. After about a minute Montgomery decides to move all-in and is beat into the center of the pot by Demidov, drawing a painful look from Scott.
Montgomery: Ad 9d
Demidov: Ks Kd
When the flop falls, things aren’t looking as good anymore for Demidov even though he still maintains the lead the 6d 4d 6c flop has brought many cards for Montgomery to hit. When the Ten of Spades hits the turn Demidov discovers he has faded one card, and the Three of Clubs on the rivers spells doom from Montgomery who goes from 2nd in chips to the short stack at 7+ Million. Demidov is in full control after that hand with over 50 Million chips. Just five hands later Scott Montgomery, finds himself all-in for the first time today. Peter Eastgate (2nd in chips) opens the pot to 1.250 Million and is quickly raised all-in from Montgomery in the Small Blind, and Eastgate makes the call:
Montgomery: Ad 3d
Eastgate: 6h 6s
When the flop hits Ac Qs 4d it leaves Montgomery feeling great which is further increased by the As on the turn. All he has to do now is avoid one of two Sixes left in the deck. To his utter disbelief he see’s the Six of Diamonds come off the deck and in a matter of minutes he goes from a potential hero to another name on the busted board. With that both the Canadians find themselves out of this event, Montgomery finishes 5th and will receive $3,096,768 for his efforts. After that hand the updated chip counts are as follows:
Dennis Phillips: 17,325,000
Ylon Schwartz: 22,175,000
Ivan Demidov: 49,100,000
Peter Eastgate: 47,625,000
As we leave you once again we are left with just four men here in the Penn & Teller theatre, they will look to try and be one of the last 2 remaining tonight for the last delay of this great event. Please keep reading our reports here from Las Vegas.
