Jason Potter, a 22 year American professional poker player, was fortunate enough to cash for $30,000 in the 2008 Aussie Millions Main Event but his fortune would not last long. On the walk back to his hotel room he was brutally attacked by a mugger who emptied his pockets. The final day of the 2008 Aussie Millions Main event saw both Erik Seidel and Alexander Kostritsyn overcome massive chip disadvantages to become the last two standing. After two hours and 64 hands of heads up play, it became apparent that even if for only this day, the two players were equally matched. On the 65th hand, Erik Seidel appeared eager to see the event end soon. He shipped about half his chip to Kostritsyn on this hand. Then 300,000 of his chips the next hand and his last 3 million on the 67th hand. Alexander Kostritsyn won $1,650,000 and has been crowned the 2008 Aussie Millions Main Event Champion, Seidel takes home a cool million buck for his runner up finish.
This past Saturday, 8 players returned for the final three rounds of the Aussie Millions’ $5,300 Heads Up Championship. The 8 players that were battling it out for the $100k first place prize were, Lee Nelson, Roy Winston, Masaaki Kagawa, Michael McDonald, Jeff Garza, David Sonelin, Alexey Popov and Xuan Nguyen. The days heavy favorite was Jeff Garza, better known as ActionJeff, who is a regular short handed high limit online professional often considered to be one of the best online poker players in the world.
There was some concern as to why United States Postal mail trucks were regularly being parked outside of Westmoreland County convenience store. A detailed investigation proved that these mail carriers were gambling on the clock. The convenience store had a back room with several video slot machines. When the police raided the store, they found the mail carriers in uniform. $10,000 and four video poker machines were confiscated.
The 2008 National Heads-Up Poker Championship is scheduled for February 29 – March 2 at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, Nevada. 64 players will compete in this tournament which uses a single elimination bracket with seeding determined by random draw.
