David Daneshgar has had a lot of success on the US poker circuit with $2 million in career winnings and even had cashed in 7 different 2005 WSOP events. Last night though was the biggest win of his career when he took down 2008 WSOP Event 52 - $1500 buy-in No Limit Texas Holdem, where he earned $625,443 top place prize money and his first career WSOP bracelet.

James Schaaf took down the $1,500 HORSE event after being down to just 200 chips and being forced to bring in on a razz hand holding 7 8 J. From that point onward, Schaaf went on a rush to win his first WSOP bracelet in his first ever final table.

Marty Smyth is arguably one of Ireland’s most successful tournament players in recent years. He has a couple deep performances in the Ladbrokes Millions, a Party Poker world open victory and a victory in Paddy Power’s Irish Cup, now he can call himself a world Champion of Omaha, the richest single Omaha prize winner of all time, the first Ireland native to have ever won a bracelet and a whole lot more as he just won 2008 WSOP $10,000 buy-in World Championship of Omaha – Event 50. Every year during the WSOP discussions pop up about who is the best player to have never won a bracelet, well the list of candidates for that title just got one name slimmer as JC Tran has finally gotten the monkey off his back by winning 2008 WSOP Event 49, for details see our Final Table Report.

Alexander Gomes won the first WSOP bracelet of his career while winning Brazil the first of the 2008 World Series of Poker when he took down the $2,000 buy-in No Limit Hold’em outlasting the field of 2,316 entrants. Ryan Hughes won his second career 7 Card Stud Hi/Lo bracelet in 2008 WSOP Event #47. Making his story even more remarkable is that this is the second year in a row he had no intention of playing this event and then a friend convinced him otherwise, and both times this happened to him he pocketed a bracelet and a nice payday. 2008 WSOP Event #46 is now in the books and the winner of this $5,000 buy-in NLHE 6-max is a former day trader from New Jersey named Joe Commisso. What is most impressive about his performance is this was only his fifth live tournament period he went on to say afterward he might never play another live tournament again, choosing to perhaps just retire on tops with his bracelet while returning his focus to online cash games. Scotty Nguyen took down Event #45 - $50,000 HORSE to win his fifth career bracelet and become the first poker player in history to win both the Main Event and the $50,000 HORSE event after defeating a final table full of the game’s top names. Young gun Michael DeMichele had a strong showing, finishing in second while Erick Lindgren took over the lead in the Player Of the Year standings with his third place finish.

Tournament director Nolan Dalla addressed WSOP players today as he announced the unfortunate news that WSOP great John Bonetti had passed away this morning at his home in Texas. His death was not unexpected as he had been battling terminal health challenges for many years which had grown more and more sever in recent months. Bonetti was often known for swearing to much, berating players and dealers and for having an overall miserable persona at the table but, like a lot of poker players this was part act and he also as Hellmuth described it “wanted to win more than you, period!”. While he was not well liked by players who knew him only at the table, those who knew him off the table had a much different opinion. His career stats speak for themselves with three career bracelets, 19 WSOP final tables (including 3 Main Event final tables), had 32 career WSOP cashes and $1,743,993 in career WSOP winnings. He was a man who had the respect and friendship of many of poker’s most elite players who are now left mourning the death of their good friend.
