The 2008 World Series of Poker is now in full swing. Here is a recap of the action taking place on May 31st.

Event #1 $10,000 PLHE Championship Event | Final Table Set

Approximately seventy of the original 354 players returned today for Day 2 of the 2008 WSOP Event #1: $10K PLHE, including Full Tilt sponsored Andy Bloch, Chris Ferguson, David Benyamine, Patrik Antonius and Jennifer Harman. Quite a few of pokers old school players also made the day two field such as Eli Elezra, Hasan Habib, Humberto Brenes, Lyle Berman and Mike Sexton and they would face off against young guns Tuan Le (2x WPT Champion) and Alexander Kostritsyn (Aussie Millions Champion) as well as other noteworthy players in Dustin “neverwin” Woolf, Kathy Liebert and Phil “the Unabomber” Laak .

One of the most interesting hands involved day one chip leader Eli Elezra and Mike Sowers. With 100k in the pot the flop came A J T with a spade draw. Sower bet the pot and Elezra made it 300k, which was enough to put Sower all in. Sower snap called holding broadway (the nuts / ace high straight), Eli needed help showing only A5 of hearts and had a glimmer of hope when the turn was the Q of hearts which gave him outs for both the chop as for the win. Unfortunately for Elezra the river was a brick and Sowers took the 700k pot. Sowers would finish off Elezra in 19th just a moment later when his 64 sucked out on Elezra’s A6.

It took nearly 15 hours for Day 2 to conclude which finally happened when Nenad Medic out raced John Kabbaj to send him home on the final table bubble. The final table will be played out tomorrow and it’s quite an impressive field as you can see from the final table standings below.

Seat 1: Mike Sowers 675,000
Seat 2: Chris Bell 455,000
Seat 3: Amit Makhija 525,000
Seat 4: Patrik Antonius 230,000
Seat 5: Andy Bloch 2,115,000
Seat 6: Mike Sexton 1,130,000
Seat 7: Phil Laak 425,000
Seat 8: Nenad Medic 1,200,000
Seat 9: Kathy Liebert 285,000

Event #2 $1500 No Limit Holdem Event | Sets a Number of Entrants Record

Event 2 of the 2008 WSOP ($1500 NLHE) started today and it managed to set the record for the largest ever WSOP field outside of the Main Event. This event drew 3929 entrants which half played Day 1 today (Day 1A), and the other half will play Day 1 tomorrow (Day 1B). The previous record for most players in a Non Main Event was set in Event #49 of last years WSOP (also a $1,500 buy-in No-Limit Hold’em tournament). Who said the popularity of poker was slowing down?

Plenty of big names in the poker world got their WSOP start in the small buy in event, but not many of them survived day 1A. Notable pros that were knocked off early included: Daniel Negreanu, Phil Ivey, Antonio Esfandiari, Greg Raymer, Ted Forrest, Johnny Chan, Hevad Khan and Hoyt Corkins.

Of course not all of poker’s big name entrants were sent packing after Day 1A, some of the notables surviving include PokerStars Sponsored Gavin Griffin, Chris Bjorin, Chris Bjorin, Matt ‘AllInAt420’ Stout, Todd Brunson (Representing Doyles Room) and Todd ‘Dan Druff’ Witteles.

We’ll update you tomorrow with the results from Day 1B as well as give you a final table recap of Event #1 $10K PLHE which will include details of who has won the first bracelet of the 2008 WSOP.
