Hello again everyone and welcome back to Melbourne and the 2009 Aussie Millions. Today we have the PLO event; this event is a second chance draw which means at any time players have the opportunity to use a bank which consist of 3,000 chips. So another words should a player choose they can start the event with 6k, or if they bust out their first 3k they can use the bank and still play.
For today’s event we have 120 players who will look to battle it out for the Gold Ring & and a nice $32,400AUD cash prize, this event will be played to its finish here today. Some of the notables here today include the likes of Lee Nelson, JC Tran, Billy “The Croc” Argyros, Craig Bergeron, Van Marcus and Jamie Pickering. We didn’t see too many crazy hands as bank period expired (Level 3), and the field has slimed only ever so slightly. As level 5 came to a close we lost Mark Kassis who won the re-buy event here earlier, but however came up short in getting a second ring of the series. With the start of level 5 we have only lost a quarter of the field (80 players remain), which is a little surprising for a PLO event which is typically action packed.
As level 6 came to a close Billy “The Croc” got his remaining chips in the middle of a pot in very bad shape against Trung Tran and Marsha Waggoner:
Billy “The Croc”: 4c-3s-2h-9s
Trung Tran: 4h-4s-Ah-10d
Marsha Waggoner: 6d-Qd-Qs-5c
The only way Billy Argyros could win was to catch perfect straight cards or running Quad 3’s. However with a 7d on the turn he was drawing dead leaving Tran looking for a pair up to win the pot, the Queen of Clubs on the river meant Waggoner’s flush was still good and if needed so was her set of queens. With that Waggoner has tripled up to over 10k and Argyros is done for the day.
With level 6 coming to an end and the dinner break looming the top 5 chip stacks are:
Timothy Depater – 42,500
Craig Bergeron – 37,500
Sean Dunwoodie – 35,000
Dave Callaghan – 27,000
Roy Bhasin – 19,000
Lee Nelson (Team PokerStars.com) has had a very up and down day today, he has recently dropped a few hands and sits in a tough spot following this hand:
Lee Nelson: Kh-Qc-9c-Kd
Errol Bramford: Ad-Ah-8c-2s
Board: 6c-5s-5h-Qd-10h
With that tough beat Lee Nelson now sits at just over 15k in chips, and with the blinds 800/1600 he looks to be in tough shape. However things are looking up for Nelson who found a double up following the start of level 13. The flop came down 2c-4d-9h and Nelson fired out a bet of 19k, which led to Nino Ascenzio putting him all-in for a few thousand more. Nelson called showing 9s-10c-6h-7c for top pair vs. Ascenzio’s 3d-5c-Kd-Qc. The turn came down the 5h giving Ascenzio many more outs against Nelson’s hand, but when the 8d came on the river it left Nelson with the pot and over 60,000 chips while Ascenzio has slipped to around 100k.
As we reach the end of level 13 we find ourselves on hand for hand play as the final table bubble is approaching, Van Marcus has just been eliminated in 11th as his King’s and Four’s double suited got tangled up with Ace’s and Jack’s suited one way of Rainer Quel. Quel hit a set of Jacks on the river that were unneeded. Van Tran became our bubble boy after David Bach’s preflop raise pot committed him to call Van Tran’s all-in, after the board was run out David Bach ended up with a straight and Van Tran is gone. After some discussion amongst the players here they have decided to call it a night (it’s almost 3am) and come back tomorrow for final table play. So at the end of the day here our final table is set, all the players are in the money and the chip counts and seat draws are as follows:
Seat 1 Rainer Quel 51,500
Seat 2 Nathan Snow 62,700
Seat 3 Sandra Propper 54,800
Seat 4 Lee Nelson 78,200
Seat 5 Rene Freymann 106,500
Seat 6 David Bach 122,000
Seat 7 Nino Ascenzio 94,700
Seat 8 Kenny Ng 98,000
Seat 9 David Morton 51,200
We’ll be back tonight at 4pm Melbourne time for the conclusion of Event 11.
Welcome back to Event #11, tonight we have the final table and it will begin on level 14 with blinds 1,200/2,400. With the cards in the air it doesn’t take long for Lee Nelson to show why he is one of the elite players in the world, Nelson was able to get his opponent to call a 11,200 bet on the flop, then both players checked the turn and with the Nut straight Nelson led out for 20k and was able to extract a value call.
With that pot Nelson is around 120k and looking to take the chip lead. Immediately following the start of level 15 David Morton has taken leave of us here today, Morton who started as the short stack was unable to improve his position and leaves in 9th place with $2,400AUD. There hasn’t been much action a lot of little pots here today and with level 15 coming to a close David Bach is way out in front with almost 200k while Nelson in second has just over 100k.
Following the elimination of Sandra Propper in 8th place by Lee Nelson, Nelson then proceeded to try and eliminate Nathan Snow. To Nelson’s chagrin Snow managed a small double up and sits on 50k in chips while Sandra Propper is done collecting $3,600AUD. It didn’t take long for our first big pot of the night as the two chip leaders collided in a massive pot! David Bach started the action by opening from middle position, which drew a pot size raise from Nelson in the Big Blind. Bach made the call and the two went to the flop:
Flop: 5c-8c-2c
With that flop Nelson checked to Bach who thought for a short amount of time before declaring “POT!” which amounted to nearly 100k. After SEVERAL minutes of deliberation Lee Nelson was spurred on by Eric Assadourian who yelled “Talk him Lee! Get some information!” that caused Lee Nelson to giggle and ask David Bach “How you doing?” which as expected provided nothing from Bach. After a few more minutes Lee Nelson finally declared “CALL!” putting Nelson at risk of elimination:
Nelson: Ac-Ad-Js-9d
Bach: 10h-9c-6d-8d
It turned out to be a “Hero” call by Nelson but to his satifaction Bach was in trouble. Bach would need to hit a 10, 6, 7, or 8 to take the lead in the hand. The turn brought a 4h which changed nothing for Bach, leaving Lee Nelson to sweat just one more card, the card every poker player loves or hates depending on his side of the felt on any given hand “THE RIVER”. The river came down a meaningless King of Diamonds sending Nelson way out in front as new chip leader.
A short while later Kenny Ng was our next victim leaving in 7th place after failing to out draw against Rene Freymann. For his efforts Ng leaves today with $5,400AUD. After the big hand between Nelson and Bach the two got into it again this time with Bach’s life on the line. All the money got in preflop and Nelson flopped open-ends to a straight, which he completed on the turn leaving Bach drawing dead. Bach leaves in 6th place taking with him $7,200AUD and leaving Nelson the far and away chip leader at over 400k. Rene Freymann and Nino Ascenzio followed Bach in 6th and 5th respectively receiving $10,800 and $14,400AUD for there efforts. With only 3 players left the chip counts are as follows:
Lee Nelson – 500,000
Nathan Snow – 125,000
Rainer Quel – 75,000
And one has to think that Nathan Snow and Rainer Quel are playing for 2nd and 3rd. As level 18 was drawing to a close Rainer Quel was happy to see that he slipped up one spot and will be guaranteed at least 2nd place After Lee Nelson eliminated Nathan Snow in 3rd. Nelson had Double Suited Kings with a 10s-5h vs. Snow’s Ah-7h-Qc-Js. The board ran out 10d-3s-3c-Jd-Qd making Snow believe he sucked out a double up only to find out he lost to Nelson’s Kings’ and 3’s. Nathan Snow will take home $19,200AUD for his efforts here over the last 2 days. As Nelson and Quel begin heads up play the chip counts are:
Nelson: 611,500
Quel: 108,500
After a quick double up Quel managed to make the full comeback and take the chip lead after getting Nelson to put him all-in while he held the nut straight vs. Nelson’s two pair. The river changed nothing as Quel managed a better straight and Nelson made 3 pair. Nelson found himself crippled only to make yet another return from the grave to eventually take the chip lead back from Quel and with that Nelson never looked back.
On the final hand Nelson out flopped Rainer’s Aces with two pair and checked called Quel’s all-in! After the turn and rivered bricked Nelson was crowned champion and will receive $32,400AUD and the Gold Ring, all the while keep PokerStars motto alive “where poker players become poker champions” Rainer Quel leaves here today in 2nd place pocketing $24,600AUD.
With that I would like to thank everyone who has been following the coverage on PokerProp.net goodnight from Melbourne Australia.
