John Juanda a member of team Full Tilt Poker outlasted the field and a 22 hour final table on Sunday October 2nd/3rd, 2008 to walk away with his first bracelet since 2003. John Juanda who is regarded as a top Tournament and Cash Game player in the world today, was able to outlast a final table which included the likes of Daniel Negreanu, Ivan Demidov (member of November Nine) and Scott Fischman to take home the 868,800 Pounds Sterling (1.515 Million USD) and the coveted gold bracelet. It took 22 hours and 484 hands, seven hours and 246 hands of which were heads up between Juanda and Stanislav Alekhin who received 533,950 Pounds Sterling for second.
After winning Juanda was quoted as saying: “It was so long ago when I won my last bracelet, I can’t remember. It’s embarrassing. Some people have to keep up with the Joneses. I have to keep up with the Iveys and Cunninghams and Negreanus. I wondered if I would ever win again.”
One of the main story lines at the Empire in London was the play of Ivan Demidov who is a member of the exclusive “November Nine” That will play for the WSOP Main Event title in just a few weeks, so for him to come to London and lay down an impressive 3rd place finish has to leave his opponents in November a little on edge.
Daniel Negreanu finished in 5th when his A-9 ran into the J-J of Alekhin on the 138th hand of the final table. Going into the final table Negreanu who won a bracelet this year at the WSOP (his 4th) was along with Juanda the odds on favorites to win. The Final Table finishes and pay outs were as follows:
