After a long wait the 2009 World Series of Poker schedule has been released. This has been a much longer wait from previous years.

2007’s WSOP schedule was released December 12th 2007
2006’s WSOP schedule was released first week of November 2005
2005’s WSOP schedule was released last week of October 2004
2004’s WSOP schedule was released last week of November 2003

There were many things that could have been related to the delay with most of them portraying to the economy. It was rumored that the WSOP organizes were very concerned about finding the necessary staff required to run this prestigious series, as a large majority of Las Vegas workers have been laid off due to the low flow of tourists and visitors. Also, many of the casinos were skeptical of investing/fronting the needed money to plan such an event like this one.

2009 WSOP Schedule ReleasedHowever, everything has no been released and the 2009 World Series of Poker is anticipating the series to be bigger and better than ever before. With that being said, Harrah’s announced that the 2009 WSOP will feature a record setting 57 events, which will run from May 26th to July 15th.

There are several new highlights to the 2009 WSOP schedule, with the biggest one being the $40,000 No Limit Texas Hold’em event honouring the 40th anniversary of the WSOP. In 2008, there was eight $10,000 World Championship events and in 2009 there will be ten $10,000 World Championship events.

A major notable change to the 2009 WSOP is there will be 39 events under $2,500 to compensate for the poor economy. There is also a Stimulus Special tournament that will be held on the opening weekend with a buy-in of $1,000 and Harrah’s has announced that it’ll draw the largest live tournament field outside the Main Event and they are predicting the prize pool to reach $5,000,000.

There will no longer be any re-buy events during the 2009 World Series of Poker. This is because it created an unfair field to poker players with an unlimited amount of money to pour into the tournaments. Daniel Negreanu, who is on the WSOP board of commissioners was one of the main advocates to remove the re-buy events. Also, there are four $5,000 buy-in events that have been removed, leaving four tournaments that have a buy-in of $5,000.

“Whether you play poker around the kitchen table or consider yourself a professional, you will find a comfortable seat at the 2009 World Series of Poker,” said WSOP commissioner Jeffrey Pollack. “This year’s schedule offers more variety than ever before, and we look forward to welcoming players from around the world to the Rio for our 40th annual extravaganza this summer.”

The $10,000 2009 Main Event tournament will once again be delayed and the November 9 will return. Which means, that the Main Event will start on July 3rd and will be played until there are nine players remaining, which will make up the 2009 November Nine. There will be a four month break and then the players will reunite to play out the rest of the tournament, which will begin on November 9th, four months later.
