The 2009 World Series of Poker is almost upon us. Pre-registration is now open and the satellites have recently started up at online poker sites such as Everest Poker. The poker community is getting ready for the end of May, which will mark the beginning of the 40th WSOP. Harrah’s has recently released the official rules and tournament structures at WorldSeriesofPoker.com for this year’s event. There have not been too many changes from last year, but there are a few things that have drawn attention from the poker world, especially the increase in starting chip stacks.
The WSOP will be cracking down on disruptive behavior and foul language. The use of obscene or foul language in any public area of the casino at any time will be prohibited. Any player who chooses to abuse this policy will be penalized, with a minimum of a verbal warning being handed down to any violators. Tournament officials may assess further penalties, depending on the situation, such as missed hands and orbits. This may also include a disqualification from the tournament. Harrah’s will keep track of penalties within a database so that frequent violators can be watched.
Many people believe this year’s harsher rules are a direct result of Scotty Nguyen’s behavior during last year’s event. At the final table of the $50,000 H.O.R.S.E. Event, which he won, Scotty was noticeably drunk. He harassed tournament and wait staff, using profane language, which was televised on ESPN for the whole poker world to see.
Another rule change will limit players from wearing any logos or patches on their skin, such as temporary tattoos or bandages depicting logos or ads. Such logos may be permitted on clothing. Players will also have to wait until the following day if a deal is made with a sponsor. Also, no more than three players may advertise the same entity at a televised table, including final tables.
As for tournament structure, starting chip stacks will now be three times the event buy-in, up from two times at last years event. This combined with the addition of levels to select tournaments will allow for more play. Thus creating a tournament atmosphere similar to the WPT, as many players feel there isn’t enough play in WSOP Events.
