It was recently announced that Director Gil Cates is going to make a documentary about the 2005 World Series of Poker Main Event; chronicling Joe Hachem’s run to the bracelet in which he defeated Steve Dannenmann. The documentary will feature the charismatic Australian Joe Hachem who was able to best a field of over 5000 players on route to the over 10 Million.
Of all the poker movies made many of them have found themselves a flop, only “Rounders” starring Matt Damon, Edward Norton and John Malkovich. This will be the first poker movie to be based on true events (2005 WSOP). The movie tilted “Pass the Sugar” will not only chronicle the event but also how he got to the point, including his birth in Lebanon and his rare blood disorder that led to the end of his career as a chiropractor.
Cates has a few films to his credit, his films tend to be centered around Poker or Gambling as he is a enthusiast himself. The five movies he has released to date are Deal, Life after tomorrow, A Midsummer Night’s Rave, The Mesmerist and $pent.
The film will feature interviews from players and celebrities including Jennifer Tilly and Jose Canseco. It shall be interesting to see how the film plays out, and whether it will be yet another flop in the long line of poker film flops since the debut of “Rounders”.
