Scotty Nguyen made history last night when he became the first person to win both the Main Event and the $50,000 HORSE event. It took over 13 hours of final table play before he would cement his place in history, but we’re sure the $1,989,120 first prize was worth his time.
The final table began with Erick Lindgren as the chip leader, closely followed by Scotty Nguyen. A full list of chip counts and seating assignments are as follows:
Seat 1: Matt Glantz (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) — 1,445,000
Seat 2: Huck Seed (Las Vegas, Nevada) — 1,200,000
Seat 3: Patrick Bueno (Paris, France) — 695,000
Seat 4: Lyle Berman (Minneapolis, Minnesota) — 1,430,000
Seat 5: Scotty Nguyen (Las Vegas, Nevada) — 3,535,000
Seat 6: Barry Greenstein (Rancho Palos Verdes, California) — 1,955,000
Seat 7: Michael DeMichele (Las Vegas, Nevada) — 905,000
Seat 8: Erick Lindgren (Las Vegas, Nevada) — 3,680,000
Erick Lingren started it off by playing a ton of hands and it seemed as though every time he got involved in a pot with young gun Michael DeMichele, Erick was taking the worst of it.
The first elimination of the night came on hand #10 when short stack Patrick Bueno got his chips all in against Lindgren in a hand of razz. Bueno held A K 4 and E-Dog had 8 7 2. Bueno ended up catching trip 4’s and his K low was not enough to take the pot. He received $230,880 for eighth place.
Huck Seed was the next to be eliminated on hand #65. Perhaps Huck didn’t know it was stud hi/lo, but he busted out while betting into DeMichele who was showing 3 2 5 6, Seed’s board read 8 9 9 Q. DeMichele turned up a flush and a low and Seed was sent home in seventh place with $284,160 to show for it.
Just 6 hands later, on hand #71, Barry Greenstein was the next to hit the rail when he ran aces up into Nguyen’s trip seven’s in a round of stud hi/lo. Barry bet into Nguyen on every street from 4th onward and Scotty coyly called with his rolled up sevens the whole way. Barry took home $355,200 for sixth place.
On hand #96 it was Lyle Berman’s turn to make an exit. Action was capped on 3rd street between DeMichele, Nguyen and Berman, putting lyle all in. There’s some confusion in the reporting as to whether DeMichele had an 8-7 low or a 7-5 low, in either case it was enough to take the pot and send Berman out in fifth with $444,000.
Hand #125 saw Matt Glantz eliminated in a hand of Omaha hi/lo. Glantz got his money all in holding Kd Jd Td Th while Scotty Nguyen held Ah Kc 2c 7d. The Flop read Qd 6c 5h, with the turn coming the Ac and the river was the 5c, giving Scotty the nut flush and a low for the scoop and sending Matt Glantz to collect fourth place prize money of $568,320.
After a lengthy three handed battle that saw Erick Lindgren go back and forth from short stack to average stack and back again, he was finally eliminated on hand #303 by Scotty Nguyen in a hand of stud. By fifth street, Lindgren was all in and had a pair of 8’s against Nguyen’s pair of nine’s, sixth street blanked for both players and seventh street did not improve Lindgren’s hand. Erick received $781,000 for third place and also took over first place in the Player Of the Year standings.
Shortly after heads up play began, 11 hands later to be exact, Michael DeMichele was eliminated in second place while holding Ac 3h against Nguyen’s Ad Th in the Hold’em round. DeMichele picked up $1,243,200 for second place and Scotty Nguyen was presented with the David “Chip” Reese memorial trophy, along with his fifth WSOP bracelet and $1,989,120.
