Well my friends I’m back again with another update on the 38th WSOP taking place this summer. So far we have gone through events #1 – #28, we have seen some World Championship Events, as well as many of the mixed forms of Poker and one of the Limited events (Ladies Event). In this portion we’ll see more mixed events, as well as three World Championship events. Let’s get to it here are events #29 – #39.

Event #29 No-limit Hold’em Sunday June 15th 12pm
This No-limit event is a $3,000 buy-in, last years event saw 827 entrants. Creating a prize pool of just under 2.5 million, this year’s event can expect the same type of numbers and create a first place prize of just over 500k. All entrants will start with 6,000 chips and play poker over three days. Last year this event saw ESPN coverage and then same can be expected this time around as well.

Event #30 World Championship Limit Hold’em Sunday June 15th 5pm
This is the fifth World Championship Event; this one limit hold’em will have a $10,000 buy-in which will leave all players with 20,000 chips. All levels will be 60 minutes and players will compete over 3 days. This event is almost assured to get ESPN coverage, and see a very deep field of the top professional players in the world. Last year this event saw 257 entries at a buy-in of $5,000, so with this year’s buy-in going up the entries may go down a bit. The increased buy-in should create a prize pool of around two million, leaving first place with in the 300k range.

Event #31 No-limit Hold’em Six Handed Monday June 16th 12pm
This is the second no limit hold’em short handed event of the WSOP, this one has a slightly larger buy-in then the last at $2,500. Players will play over 3 days and begin with 5,000 chips with each level lasting 60 minutes. Last year’s field had 847 entrants all vying for a half million dollar prize. This year should see an increase over that but not by much, you can expect a high end of a 1,000 entrants. WSOP Live will likely pick up the coverage on this event for the second straight year. Last year’s defending champion is Hoyt Corkins a well known pro from good old Texas.

Event #32 No-limit Hold’em Tuesday June 17th 12pm
This is another of the six $1,500 no-limit events and can expect similar numbers to all the others. With all players starting with 3,000 chips and playing over 3 days this will be another big draw event. Approximately 2,500 players will compete for anywhere from a half million to three quarters of a million dollars. This event should receive either WSOP Live coverage or ESPN coverage.

Event #33 World Championship Seven Card Stud 8 or Better Tuesday June 17th 5pm
This is the sixth World Championship Event, and the second that we will cover in this update. This event the Seven Card Stud Hi-Low event, will see a limited field and be mostly big name pro’s. Last year on 236 players entered, however they only had to pay $3,000 so with this year’s buy-in of 5k that number will go down slightly. You can expect to see around 200 entrants playing for around $250,000. Last year had a very elite field with Eli Elezra winning it all. Other notables Scotty Nguyen 2nd, Russ “Dutch” Boyd 3rd, David Sklansky 5th, “Miami” John Cernuto 10th, and Marcel Luske 13th among others. All levels will be 60 minutes and be played over 3 days, with players starting at 10,000 chips. We can definitely expect to see coverage of this event on ESPN.

Event #34 Pot Limit Omaha w/Re-buys Wednesday June 18th 12pm
Here we have yet another re-buy event this one in Pot limit Omaha, this event drew a nice field of 293 players last year that all came up with another 880 re-buys. That created a prize pool of 1.7 million pretty impressive for a tournament with only a $1,500 buy-in. Last year Alan Smurfit walked home with just under $500,000. This year’s event should expect similar numbers; all players will compete with 3,000 chips over 3 days at 60 minute levels.

Event #35 Seven Card Stud Wednesday June 18th 5pm
The next event in the WSOP is a $1,500 Seven Card Stud, this event can expect a smaller crowd as Stud is a dieing game unfortunately as it is such a great game. This event can expect a similar field as last year in around 400 entrants, and nice first place prize of around $150,000. Stud is mostly played by the older players which if you do enter this event you will defiantly see. With 60 minute levels and 3 days of action players will get a lot of play out of their 3,000 chips.

Event #36 No-limit Hold’em Thursday June 19th 12pm
Next we have yet another $1,500 buy-in No-limit Hold’em event, there is not much I can say here that I have not already said before. So look back at some of my previous discussions on this event type and level. As with the other’s it is a 3 day event with players competing over 60 minute levels with 3,000 chips.

Event #37 World Championship Omaha Hi-Low Split 8 or Better Thursday June 19th 5pm
Here we have the 7th World Championship Event out of 10 and the 3rd one we’ll cover today. Omaha Hi-low Split 8 or Better is widely seen as a game that requires no skill. I promise you that view is for those that have lost a good chunk of money because they did not know what they were doing. This is another of the 10k buy-ins which should insure a small field, at 5k last year there were 280 entries that number should see a small decrease around 220. In these types of events they top spots tend to be studded with big names however last year the first notable name was that of Annie Duke at 13th, from there down the names are quite well known. With around 200 players the first place prize should be in the 500k range give or take a bit. Over the 3 days players will battle it out with 20,000 chips and an increase in blinds every 60 minutes. You can bet ESPN will be covering this event.

Event #38 Pot Limit Hold’em Friday June 20th 12pm
Next we have the second Pot Limit Hold’em event of this year’s WSOP, this one is slightly more at $2,000. This will cause a slightly smaller field probably around 650 players, leaving a first place that will be about the same as the larger event, in around $260,000. With 4,000 chips players will yet again see 60 minute levels over 3 days. This event can expect some WSOP Live coverage or ESPN coverage.

Event #39 No-limit Hold’em Saturday June 21st 12pm
Yet again we see another $1,500 event as we get closer to the main event. Again we can safely say the numbers should stay true to the other events of this buy-in. The levels, chips, and days are all consistent as well.

Event #40 2 – 7 Limit Triple Draw Sunday June 22nd 12pm
To leave us off today we have a 2 – 7 Triple draw event. These types of lowball events are like candy to the pro’s they love this stuff. In 2 – 7 the idea is to make the worst possible hand, thus the nuts are 7, 5, 4, 3, 2 of at least 2 suits as flush count against your hand. This game type is one of Daniel Negreanu’s favorites, he was chosen to write the chapter on this game for Doyle Brunson’s book Poker Super System’s 2. It’s very difficult to make any predications on this event as it is essentially a new event to the WSOP, last year the similar event was a $1,000 re-buy event. I imagine that you will see around 200 players ponying up the $2,500 to sit with some of the best in the world. This should see first place leaving with about $125,000. It will be a tough 3 days for many that enter, and many will see the world’s best relieving them of there 5,000 starting chips.

Well with that my friends I leave you for yet another week, and till next week when we make our run to the main event. Good luck to all of you on the tables. I have a bit of news for those of you following these articles; the WSOP website will begin taking pre-event registration on March 1st 2008. Till next time ciao!
