Last time it was Absolute Poker, this time it was Ultimate Bet. The good news is that players funds are being returned, the news which is not so surprising is that there story doesn’t entirely add up. In case you hadn’t head JohnnyBax (real life name Cliff Josephy) has signed a deal to endorse Ultimate Bet as one of their sponsored professionals. Considering Bax is one of the most looked up to online poker players in the industry, the poker community is shocked to see he has aligned himself with a company known to have cheated players out of millions of dollars. There is currently a thread at 2+2 approaching 400 posts of which 75 percent or so express concerns, disgust, outrage or shock regarding his decision.
World Poker Exchange is offering players a chance to freeroll to the 2008 World Series of Poker Main Event. While normally with all the chances available elsewhere to win WSOP main event seats this news would not be all that newsworthy. What makes WPEX unique is the fact they offer all players (signing up with bonus code: WPXPROP) 80 percent rakeback paid weekly. Its not often players will find a poker room paying them this high a rakeback rate that will also provide them an opportunity to use poker points for a chance to earn a Main Event seat.
Shannon Elizabeth is no stranger to poker site endorsements; she’s been seen in the past shilling for Bodog, Full Tilt, Mansion and most recently Doyles Room.com. News came out this past week that she’s signed an endorsement deal spanning from now until the conclusion of the WSOP to promote DoylesRoom as a Team Brunson member. One can’t help but wonder how Louise feels about her husband running around Las Vegas with the likes of a team which already included Pamela Anderson, Jamie-Lynn Sigler and Nicky Hilton that now includes Shannon Elizabeth. I suppose though when you’re married to a man with the money Doyle Brunson has perhaps you might not worry about the small stuff, after all we’re talking “A LOT of $$$”.
Remember that crazy $25K buy-in heads up tournament at Full Tilt I told you about. Well apparently there was no need to extend the field to 128 as in the end it ran as a 64 player bracket tournament which concluded this past Sunday. When Sundays play began there were four players, until whitelime eliminated Andy Bloch and David Singer eliminated Brian Hastings (thanks to sick sucksouts) to get us to the final match. On the internet R&D stands for rip off and duplicate more than it stands for research and development. Oh well though it’s all good for us poker players as no longer is Full Tilt the only site offering a Mini-SOP as Bodog Poker has announced a similar promotion. The Bodog Mini-SOP features only the Holdem versions of the World Series of Poker with the duplicate tournament being held online with a buy-in equal to 1 percent of that of its Las Vegas counterpart. Bodog’s unique spin on their Mini-SOP is that there will be a Tournament Leader Board (TLB) which will be used to determine which players are invited to a tournament of champions. Playing the entire series of 25 tournaments will cost a player just $821, and there is a big incentive to do just that. The top 4 finishers on the TLB as well as 18 of the top 5-100 finishers (determined by July 8th private satellite) will join 5 wild card entries to play in event 26 of this series. This 27 player event will pay those finishing in 4th through 9th T$109 and will pay the top 3 finishers a 2009 World Series of Poker main event seat. While the idea for this tournament is not unique, the structure and what is up for grabs easily allows us to forgive Bodog for borrowing someone else’s ideas. I for one look forward to playing Both the Bodog and Full Tilt mini-SOPs starting May 30.
The geniuses behind most online poker rooms usually think up some scheme to reward players lucky enough to be sitting at tables when a milestone hand is dealt. This of course is fun and all for those with lottery like mentalities, but at least one online poker room has decided to celebrate their billionth-hand milestone in such a way that rewards us plus EV minded gamblers. Ladbrokes Poker will award all players earning 50 poker points the billionth hand is dealt an entry into a $300,000 WSOP freeroll. The top 20 finishers in this freeroll receive a $14,000 Main event prize package and the 200 runners up receive a $109 buy-in to a second chance freeroll. Ladbrokes expects the billionth hand to be dealt sometime in June.
Full Tilt Poker is offering players without the bankroll or means to get to Las Vegas a chance to compete in a miniature online version of 2008 WSOP.. This will be called the Full Tilt MSOP with the M standing for mini. Each tournament has the same structure as its live counterpart with the primary difference being these tournaments will be played online and feature a buy-ins 1/100th of the ordinary cost.
If you though age 30 was old in football and hockey, it’s apparently much older on the International Poker scene where young gun after young gun continue to take down high stakes poker tournaments. The newest big money poker winner is 24 year old Hungarian, Valdemar Kwayssen who scored $274,103 for his LAPT Costa Rica victory. This was only the second ever leg of PokerStars Latin American Poker Tour wich has proven to be a huge success (although we can’t help but wonder if PokerStars would prefer players with easier to remember names would win these events). Thanks to PokerStars we’ll be hearing more tourist from mainland Chinese saying things like 他妈的你们是怎么要求与 or 所有在 on the main Macau strip, which are both poor Google translated versions of “what the f**k, how did you call with that” and “all in”. This is all because the Asian Poker Tour, another PokerStars brain child, was so successful the Chinese Government decided to allow PokerStars to open the first legal live poker room in Macau, the grand opening was today. This is a big win for PokerStars as the Asian market is one online poker has had an eye on for years and not only have they become the online poker room to gain brand presence in Asia; they’ve also become the first online poker room to bridge the gap between brick and mortar and internet poker.
